Fazane Malik Age 30 from Ilkeston, Derbyshire recently won a prestigious Fashion Award ‘Midlands Independent Designer of the Year 2013 for her brand ‘Fazane Malik’
Fazane has worked in the industry for ten years. She started off working for a high-end clothing manufacturer developing ranges for the likes of Hobbs, Jaeger, Paul Smith, Whistles, Monsoon, Boden and many more. She started her label 2 years ago and left her job with the clothing manufacturer a year ago to concentrate on it fully.
The brand ethos is to create wearable capsule collections of easy pieces that will fit into any working woman’s existing wardrobe. “Not every woman wants to look like a fashion slave” says Fazane “so we offer really great classics that still look stylish and different but last for more than one season”
All styles are made to the highest standards which is testament to Fazane’s manufacturing background with each one individually hand signed and numbered for exclusivity. Each garment features the label’s signature monochrome printed silk as a lining, trim or detail.
Fazane was nominated for the award earlier this year and faced stiff competition from 5 other Midlands based brands and designers.
The awards took place on the 11th October in Birmingham hosted by ITV Presenter Lucy Kite.
The prestigious judging panel consisted of MFA Founder and Managing Director, Jenny Eason, Editor in Chief of Style Birmingham, Andrew Riley, Founder and Director of Rees, Bradley Hepburn, Founding Member of Young British Designers, Debra Hepburn, Fashion Expert Alison Lewy of Fashion Angel and Stylist Jason Forrest.
The annual event now in its 5th Year showcases collections from Independent, Emerging and Young designers from across the region as well as new for this year Make-up Artist, Stylist and Accessory Designer categories.
Jenny Eason founder of the MFA awards said “Fazane was a very deserving winner, her designs were amazing and I really loved the collection”
Fazane said “”I am very honoured to have won this award in the face of such tough competition. I have long been a champion of the amazing talent on offer here in the Midlands and it was through last year’s winner that I got involved with the Midlands Fashion Awards this year. I had a pop-up shop showcasing the best of Midlands designer brands and labels and came across Tamara because of her win last year. I stocked her in the pop-up shop and became firm friends! I think it’s great that talent in the Midlands is being recognised….and to win when I have long been a champion of such talent makes it all the more special! I was also very impressed with the professionalism of everyone involved and how well organised it was! I have done a number of London based shows….and they don’t even come close to how good the MFA’s were! All the other nominees were really friendly and supportive of each other…something that doesn’t often happen in Fashion….the Midlands really do have some special people!”
